  1. 1990s

    Settles in Sharon, Connecticut

    Since the 1990s Johns has lived and worked in Sharon, Connecticut. After his death he plans to turn the 170-acre property into a residency providing live-work space for 18 to 24 visual artists, poets, musicians and dancers at a time.

  2. 1994

    Edward MacDowell Medal

    In 1994 Johns was awarded the Edward MacDowell Medal and became a full national academician of the National Academy of Design.

  3. 1995–1997

    His own print studio, Low Road Studio

    In 1995 Johns hired the master printmaker John Lund and began building a printmaking studio on his property in Sharon; in 1997 Low Road Studio was officially founded as his own publishing imprint.

  4. 1998

    The Metropolitan Museum buys “White Flag”

    In 1998 the Metropolitan Museum of Art bought White Flag (1955), the first painting by Johns to enter its collection. The museum did not disclose the price, but according to the New York Times experts estimated its value at more than $20 million.
