Ginevra de' Benci is a portrait painting by Leonardo da Vinci of the 15th-century Florentine aristocrat Ginevra de' Benci (born c. 1458). It was acquired by the National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C. US from Franz Joseph II, Prince of Liechtenstein in February 1967 for a record price for a painting of between $5 and $6 million. It is the only painting by Leonardo on public view in the Americas.

Master of the Guild of Saint Luke
At twenty Leonardo qualified as a master in the Guild of Saint Luke, the guild of artists and doctors of medicine. Even after his father set him up in his own workshop, he went on working and living with Verrocchio.

Charged with sodomy; the case is dismissed
Leonardo, aged twenty-four, and three other young men were charged with sodomy; the charges were dismissed for lack of evidence. It has been speculated that the Medici used their influence, since one of the accused, Lionardo de Tornabuoni, was related to Lorenzo de' Medici.

An independent commission: an altarpiece for the Signoria
Leonardo received a commission for an altarpiece for the Chapel of Saint Bernard in the Palazzo della Signoria, Florence's town hall — a sign of his independence from Verrocchio's workshop. It was never completed.
