  2. 26 October 1508

Sets out for Italy with Philip of Burgundy

Leaves Mechelen with the admiral Philip of Burgundy and his retinue; the admiral is bound for Pope Julius II on a diplomatic mission on behalf of the regent Margaret of Austria (other accounts say it was at the behest of Philip the Handsome). Philip is believed to have taken Gossaert into his retinue for the length of this mission; after 1507 the painter's name vanishes from the Antwerp archives.

  4. 14 January 1509

    Arrives in Rome

Reaches Rome as one of the first Netherlandish painters to visit Italy. At that moment Michelangelo was painting the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel and Raphael was decorating the Stanze in the Apostolic Palace of the Vatican.

  5. summer 1509

    Returns from Italy

By 28 June 1509 Philip's party, which in all likelihood included Gossaert, was back in The Hague. That summer Philip withdraws to his Zeeland seat of Suytburg, plans the decoration of the castle and orders pictures from Gossaert and Jacopo de' Barbari.
