About the sculpture

The model for this sculpture was Marie van Goethem, a young student at the Paris Opera ballet school. The impoverished girl lived with her mother and two sisters near Degas’ home and studio in Montmartre. Degas made several nude studies of Marie before creating this sculpture in wax in 1878. It was a so-called maquette – a preparatory sketch for a larger dressed version of the dancer. Her pose does not reflect any ballet position or exercise. Degas never exhibited the wax sculpture, which was cast in bronze in several copies after his death.
