About the painting

When Jesus was presented in the Temple only Simeon and Hanna recognised the Saviour. Simeon had been told in a vision that he would not die before he had viewed the Infant. The focus on the psychological interaction between the blind Simeon and the child endows the work with profound humanity. Considered Rembrandt’s final work, it was left unfinished in his studio when he died. The broad brushwork, dark ground and thickly applied paint are characteristic of Rembrandt’s later style.
