About the painting

Painted by Mianyi, a grandson of the Qianlong emperor, this album leaf exemplifies the refined aesthetic cultivated among the Qing imperial court. Unlike literati painters, who often favored expressive ink and allusive subjects, court artists prized brilliant color, meticulous brushwork, and lifelike description. Here, layers of translucent pink petals and carefully modeled leaves convey the peony’s luxuriant beauty with remarkable precision. Long celebrated as the “king of flowers, ” the peony symbolized wealth, honor, and imperial prosperity, making it an especially appropriate subject for the court.
