In the life of Ernst Ludwig Kirchner

The whole life
  1. 1907–1911

Summers at the Moritzburg lakes and on Fehmarn

From 1907 to 1911 Kirchner spent the summers with other Brücke members at the Moritzburg lakes and on the island of Fehmarn, to which he returned until 1914; in these years his work featured the female nude in natural settings.

  2. October 1911

    Moves to Berlin

In October 1911 Kirchner moved to Berlin; new themes entered his painting — life in the big city, its streets and architecture, the human types characteristic of the capital.

  3. October 1911

    Meets Erna Schilling

In the same month Kirchner met Erna Schilling, who later became his common-law wife.

  4. 1913

The “Brücke Chronicle” and the break-up of the group

In 1913 Kirchner wrote the “Chronicle of the Brücke group,” in which, his comrades felt, he overstated his own role in its creation; a quarrel followed, Kirchner left the Brücke and the group fell apart.

  5. 1913

    First solo exhibition in Essen

In 1913 the Folkwang Museum in Essen held Kirchner’s first solo exhibition, which established his individual identity beyond the group.

  6. 1913

First showing in the US: the Armory Show

In 1913 Kirchner’s work was shown publicly in the United States for the first time, at the Armory Show, the first major display of modern art in America.
