  1. 1773

    A self-portrait in the Uffizi — beneath Raphael's own

    In 1773 Mengs's self-portrait in the Uffizi gallery was hung in a place of honour — beneath the self-portrait of Raphael.

  2. 1774

    Meeting the young Goya

    In Spain Mengs met the young Francisco Goya and probably recognised his talent and helped him obtain a post as court painter and cartoonist at the Royal Tapestry Factory of Santa Barbara.

  3. 1774

    Elected prince of the Roman Academy of St Luke

    In 1774 Mengs was elected prince (president) of the Roman Academy of St Luke.

  4. 1774

    Back in Spain: cartoons for the Santa Barbara tapestry works

    In 1774 Mengs came to Spain once more; he himself produced cartoons for the Royal Tapestry Factory of Santa Barbara.

  5. 1777

    Returns to Rome because of ill health

    Because of illness — he tolerated the cold Madrid winters badly — Mengs returned to Rome in 1777.

  6. 29 June 1779
