Meanwhile, in the life of Dorothea Tanning

The whole life
  1. 1950s–1970s

    Becomes an active printmaker

While living in France she works in the ateliers of Georges Visat and Pierre Chave and makes work for limited-edition artists’ books by such poets as Alain Bosquet, René Crevel, Lena Leclerq and André Pieyre de Mandiargues.

  2. 1969–1973

A five-year adventure in soft sculpture

By the late 1960s her paintings are almost completely abstract yet still suggestive of the female form; from 1969 to 1973 she devotes herself to three-dimensional works in fabric, seeing in soft sculpture cloth as a material for high purpose and softness over hardness.

  3. 1973

The book “En chair et en or” with her poems

The limited-edition book En chair et en or appears, with Tanning’s etchings accompanied by her own original poems.

  4. 1974

    Retrospective in Paris

A major retrospective of her work is held at the Centre National d’Art Contemporain, which became the Centre Georges Pompidou in 1977.
