The whole life
  1. 1946

    Married: Max Ernst

  2. 1946–1948

    A house in Sedona, Arizona

After the wedding — a double ceremony in Hollywood with Man Ray and Juliet Browner — Tanning and Ernst settle in Sedona, build a house and host friends crossing the country, among them Henri Cartier-Bresson, Lee Miller, Roland Penrose, Yves Tanguy, Kay Sage, Pavel Tchelitchew, George Balanchine and Dylan Thomas.

  3. 1947

Appears in a Hans Richter film

She performs in Hans Richter’s avant-garde film Dreams That Money Can Buy.

  4. 1948

    Second solo exhibition with Levy

Tanning’s second solo exhibition at Julien Levy’s gallery, after the first in 1944.

  5. 1949

    Moves to France

Tanning and Ernst relocate to France (other accounts give 1948), dividing their time between Paris and Touraine and returning to Sedona at intervals through the mid-1950s.

  6. 1950s–1970s

    Becomes an active printmaker

While living in France she works in the ateliers of Georges Visat and Pierre Chave and makes work for limited-edition artists’ books by such poets as Alain Bosquet, René Crevel, Lena Leclerq and André Pieyre de Mandiargues.
