Om skulpturen

The third-century schist Buddha in New York's Metropolitan Museum may come from Takht-i-bahi monastery in ancient Gandhara, now Pakistan. Lowered eyes and a frontal stance suggest placement in a raised niche for worship. The missing right hand probably offered protection. The robe falls in successive folds over a carefully proportioned body, with a thoroughly finished stone surface.
