Loses his memory: Alzheimer’s disease
Toward the end of his life, in the late 1980s, De Kooning began to lose his memory and had been suffering from Alzheimer’s disease for some time. The revelation sparked considerable debate among scholars and critics about how responsible he was for the creation of his late work.
