Паулюс Поттер был не только пейзажистом, но, в первую очередь, талантливым анималистом. Одним из шедевров этого жанра является его «Цепная собака». Простой дворовый пес, несущий сторожевую службу, написан с большой симпатией и даже уважением. Конечно, он не чета тем породистым охотничьим собакам, которых предпочитали изображать европейские художники в сценах травли диких зверей или на парадных портретах рядом с их хозяевами-аристократами. Да и в самой картине Поттера нет ничего внешне эффектного: она подкупает именно своей безыскусственностью и точностью передачи натуры. Пёс изображен в период весенней линьки: шерсть на нем свалялась, кое-где обнажив кожу. Расставив лапы и прижав уши, он спокойно, но чутко следит за кем-то, готовый в любую минуту дать отпор нежданному «гостю». Кажется, что Поттер разглядывал собаку, лёжа на земле.

С этого низкого ракурса фигура животного чётко рисуется на фоне пейзажа, придавая образу дворняги черты неожиданной монументальности и значительности. На будке мы можем прочитать имя художника. Возможно, он вложил в свою подпись какой-то особый смысл, невольно сравнив себя со служебной собакой. На дальнем плане картины мы видим традиционный голландский ландшафт: очертания города вдали, пасущихся на берегу реки коров, медленно плывущие со стороны моря низкие кучевые облака.

    Potter rents a house in The Hague from the painter Jan van Goyen and joins the local painters' guild; for several years he lives next door to van Goyen.

    Potter marries Adriana van Balckeneynde, daughter of the Hague master carpenter and building contractor Claes Dircksz, who lived nearby; his father-in-law introduces him to the Dutch elite. None of their children will reach adulthood.

    Moves to Amsterdam at Tulp's invitation

    At the invitation of the physician Nicolaes Tulp, who already owned a number of his paintings, Potter goes to Amsterdam. Impressed by the artist's civilized behaviour and politeness, Tulp has him paint his son Dirck as a noble equestrian, life-size, with the head painted on a portrait originally intended for someone else.
