Sobre el cuadro

En palabras del museo — en ruso

  1. 1772–1773

A second stay in Naples: royal portraits

From 1772 to 1773 Mengs was again in Naples, once more working on portraits of members of the royal family.

  2. 1773

    A self-portrait in the Uffizi — beneath Raphael's own

In 1773 Mengs's self-portrait in the Uffizi gallery was hung in a place of honour — beneath the self-portrait of Raphael.

  3. 1774

Elected prince of the Roman Academy of St Luke

In 1774 Mengs was elected prince (president) of the Roman Academy of St Luke.

  4. 1774

    Meeting the young Goya

In Spain Mengs met the young Francisco Goya and probably recognised his talent and helped him obtain a post as court painter and cartoonist at the Royal Tapestry Factory of Santa Barbara.

  5. 1774

Back in Spain: cartoons for the Santa Barbara tapestry works

In 1774 Mengs came to Spain once more; he himself produced cartoons for the Royal Tapestry Factory of Santa Barbara.

  6. 1777

Returns to Rome because of ill health

Because of illness — he tolerated the cold Madrid winters badly — Mengs returned to Rome in 1777.
