In 2006 the collectors Anne and Kenneth Griffin bought False Start (1959) from David Geffen for $80 million, making it the most expensive painting by a living artist.

The National Gallery acquires 1,700 of his prints
In 2007 the National Gallery of Art in Washington acquired about 1,700 of Johns's prints, becoming the largest holder of his work.

A 1958 “Flag” sells for $110 million
In 2010 a 1958 Flag was reportedly sold privately to the hedge fund billionaire Steven A. Cohen for about $110 million, the most expensive artwork sold by a living artist; the seller was Jean-Christophe Castelli, son of Leo Castelli. Other accounts name the work as Three Flags (1958).
