  2. until April 1720

    His own engraving workshop

By April 1720 Hogarth was an engraver in his own right: he opened a small workshop, at first engraving coats of arms and shop bills and designing plates for booksellers.

  3. 1720

The first St Martin’s Lane Academy

In 1720 Hogarth enrolled at the original St Martin’s Lane Academy in Peter Court, run by Louis Chéron and John Vanderbank; future leading figures in art and design studied there too — Joseph Highmore, William Kent, Arthur Pond. The academy closed around 1724: in Hogarth’s recollection the treasurer sank the subscription money, and Vanderbank fled to France to escape his creditors.
