About the sculpture
This is an ivory figure made in the 14th century in France (Paris), representing The Crucified Christ. Ivory crucifix figures, undoubtedly once numerous, are now relatively rare. Despite the paucity of other examples, a date in the first quarter of the 14th century, perhaps around 1320, can be arrived at by comparison with a figure mounted on a silver and rock-crystal cross now in the Prado in Madrid. The present figure might have been mounted on an altar cross, but may have formed the central part of an ivory retable devoted to the Passion of Christ.
