Don Juan of Austria the Younger, who succeeded the archduke as governor of the Netherlands in 1656, continued to patronize the artist and, according to tradition, took painting lessons from him.

The artist's first wife, Anna Brueghel, died; Teniers bore his widowhood with difficulty.

Second Marriage, to Isabella de Fren
He married Isabella de Fren, sister of the secretary of the Council of Brabant; his second wife brought a large dowry. The marriage produced four children.

Publication of the "Theatrum Pictorium"
The album of engravings Theatrum Pictorium ("Theatre of Painting") was published in Brussels — in essence, the first illustrated catalogue of a private painting collection in history.
