May one see it?
Minneapolis, United States
It belongs to the collection, but is not on display at present.
Five inky skeletons with spindly limbs dance around, two of them grasping seals in their bony hands. Characteristic of Doi Gōga’s works are the blunt, velvety black brushstrokes that bleed into the surrounding paper; the exaggerated incidences of “flying white” (smudgy lines that reveal white streaks); the paler strokes conveying depth; and, perhaps most unusually, the incorporation of his seals into the pictorial space.
The inscription reads: “It does not matter if you are blessed with a beautiful form; just look at the actions of your skull.”
