Франческо Казанова — один из выдающихся баталистов второй половины XVIII в., младший брат Джакомо, в свое время гораздо более прославленный, чем ныне всем известный авантюрист: того нередко представляли как «брата знаменитого художника Казановы». Венецианец по рождению и по первым опытам в живописи (он учился у Джанантонио Гварди и Франческо Симонини), Франческо в 24 года переехал во Францию, где добился большого успеха и при знания, став членом Французской академии. Постоянный участник Парижских салонов, Казанова обрел европейскую известность благодаря обзорам Дени Дидро, публиковавшимся в «Correspondance letteraire, philosophique et critique» Гримма — многие европейские монархи были подписчиками журнала, и Екатерина II в их числе. Уже в 1768 г. русская императрица приобрела один из пейзажей Казановы для Эрмитажа.

Дидро писал: «В России есть люди с чувством и тонким вкусом, и я обратил внимание... императрицы, генерала Бецкого и графа Орлова на картины Казановы». Во «Взятии Очакова» представлен момент получения ключей от крепости генерал-фельдмаршалом князем Г. А. Потемкиным-Таврическим из рук турецкого коменданта Гуссейн-паши. Рядом с Потемкиным, справа, изображен, судя по всему, бригадир В. С. Попов, состоявший при князе чиновником по особым поручениям (с лентами ордена Святого Георгия 2-й степени, полученного за Очаков, и Святого Владимира 3-й степени, полученного в 1787 г.). Портрет Потемкина написан с гравюры Г. Харитонова, созданной по рисунку М. Иванова, — именно на ней светлейший представлен с лентой ордена Святого Георгия, где полосы идут не вдоль, а почему-то поперек — эта ошибка перенесена в картину Казановы. Автор аннотации: И. С.
