жизнь художника почти с самого начала [1871] года была омрачена начавшимся у него заболеванием легких. С наступлением холодной петербургской весны процесс обострился, и явно выступили признаки развивавшегося туберкулеза, заставившего Васильева по настоянию врачей уехать из Петербурга в Крым. Васильев со свойственной ему настойчивостью и увлеченностью начинает работать над изучением в рисунках формы морской волны и всей изменчивой и увлекательной картины морского прибоя набегающих на берег волн. Альбом заполнялся рисунками, методически осваивалась закономерность и красота этого явления, напоминающего собой о вечной изменчивости морской стихии. Думается, что эта вспыхнувшая и оживившая душу Васильева увлеченность морской темой многим была обязана приезду в Ялту Крамского и их частым прогулкам по берегу моря. Вспоминая позднее в письмах об этом коротком свидании, Крамской особо выделяет сохранившиеся впечатления: « Но волны, вот как живые стоят передо мной, валы так и заворачиваются, так и шумят, шельмецы, а Федор Александрович все их чертит, да по законам физики старается уразуметь ».   1. winter 1870

    A Cold and Tuberculosis

    While working on The Thaw in the winter of 1870, Vasilyev caught a severe cold; he was found to have tuberculosis, which determined the course of the rest of his life.

  2. summer 1870

    Journey down the Volga with Repin

    Together with I. Repin and E. Makarov, Vasilyev sailed down the Volga from Tver to Saratov, setting up working quarters opposite the Zhiguli Hills. The Volga impressions and drawings served as the basis for a number of paintings.

  3. 1870

    One of the Founders of the Peredvizhniki

    Vasilyev was among the first twenty members of the Society for Travelling Art Exhibitions (the Peredvizhniki).

  4. 1871

    Move to Yalta

    Because of his tuberculosis, Vasilyev left St. Petersburg for good and, with funds from the Society for the Encouragement of the Arts, went to Crimea. He spent the last two years of his life in Yalta, working hard and intensely, at times at the expense of his treatment.

  5. 1872

    "The Thaw" at the London International Exhibition

    An author's replica of The Thaw, commissioned by the future Emperor Alexander III, was shown at the 1872 International Exhibition in London and awarded a medal.
