About the work
Museum text in Russian
In the life of Ivan Aivazovsky
The whole life1858
Daughter born: Zhanna Aivazovskaya
1860–1877
Separation from Julia Graves and divorce
After twelve years of marriage his wife leaves Aivazovsky; the marriage is dissolved only in 1877, with the Armenian Church's permission, since Graves was a Lutheran. The cause of the divorce is given as Aivazovsky's systematic physical abuse of his wife.
1865
Opens an art studio in Feodosia
In 1865 Aivazovsky opens an art studio in Feodosia, and the same year the Imperial Academy of Arts awards him a salary.
1868
First trip to Eastern Armenia
His long-held wish to see his ancestral land is fulfilled in 1868: Aivazovsky travels in the Caucasus, visits Russian (Eastern) Armenia for the first time and paints Mount Ararat, the Ararat plain and Lake Sevan, becoming the first Armenian artist to depict the two-peaked biblical mountain. He then holds an exhibition in Tiflis (some accounts date it to 1869, others to 1868).
1868
Constantinople and the Cretan Revolt
In 1868 Aivazovsky again visits Constantinople and produces a series of works about the Greek resistance to the Turks during the Great Cretan Revolution; in the 1860s he also paints several pictures inspired by Greek nationalism and Italian unification.
17 November 1869
The opening of the Suez Canal
On 17 November 1869 Aivazovsky and his youngest daughter Zhanna enter the Suez Canal aboard the Russian steamer “General Kotzebue”, as part of a delegation of officials, deputies and journalists. Inspired by the event he paints “The Suez Canal” and a number of Egyptian landscapes; he is credited with being the first artist to paint the canal.
