    The first worldwide retrospective of his painting and graphic work opens at the Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam and the Galerie Motte in Geneva; later retrospectives are held many times in Paris, Brussels, Vienna, Stockholm, Lisbon, New York, Montreal and Tokyo.

    He refuses to accept France's grand prix national des Lettres, as he refused every honor he was accorded in his life. Other accounts date this to 1964.
