In the life of Henri Michaux

The whole life
  1. 1922–1952

    Letters to Franz Hellens

He writes letters to Franz Hellens; published only after Michaux's death, they cover 1922–1952.

  2. 1940s and 1950s

    Association with Tachisme

In the 1940s and 1950s he is associated with Tachisme, though that describes only a small part of his artistic achievement, such as his hallucinatory representations of faces and heads; his work often uses dense, suggestively gestural strokes that incorporate calligraphy, asemic writing and abstract expressionism.

  3. 1944

    “The Space Within” appears

A collection of hallucinatory lyrics and grotesque-fantastic prose poems; it is followed by “Life in the Folds” (1949) and “Face aux verrous” (1954), and he illustrates many of his books himself.
