Эрмитажный "Натюрморт" Декана является нетрадиционным с точки зрения подбора предметов. В центре на одном крючке висят битый заяц и петух - охотничий трофей и домашняя птица. Оперение петуха эффектно выделяется на фоне белой ткани. Слева - пустой крючок, справа - косо висящий жестяной фонарь, под которым в нижней части композиции виден фрагмент спинки стула. Несмотря на строгое равновесие в расположении форм, картина производит впечатление не искусственно созданного ансамбля, а естественного фрагмента реальной действительности.

A journey to the East
Decamps traveled to Greece with Ambroise-Louis Garneray, then visited Constantinople, Asia Minor and the Middle East. The sketches he brought back supplied material for his paintings for years.
