In the life of Thomas Lawrence

The whole life
  1. 1790

Queen Charlotte and Elizabeth Farren on show

The Academy exhibition shows his portrait of Queen Charlotte, which, despite the sitter’s displeasure, wins critical acclaim. Also exhibited is the portrait of the actress Elizabeth Farren, soon to be Countess of Derby: it makes Lawrence still more famous, and a newspaper notes that in it the actress is entirely herself — arch, spirited, elegant and engaging.

  2. 1790

A failed bid for the Academy

Although election was possible from the age of 24, his candidacy for associate membership of the Royal Academy is put to the vote but fails: three votes to six, and the place goes to Wheatley.

  3. 1791

Elected an associate of the Royal Academy

Elected an associate of the Royal Academy of Arts, a year after the failed attempt of 1790.

  4. 1792

    Post: court painter

  5. 1794

Full member of the Royal Academy

Becomes a full member of the Royal Academy of Arts. Commissions pour in, but Lawrence is in financial difficulties: his debts will stay with him for the rest of his life — he will narrowly avoid bankruptcy, be bailed out more than once by wealthy sitters and friends, and die insolvent.
