    French Academy in Rome

  2. August 1807

    Breaking off the engagement to Julie Forestier

    In August 1807, absorbed in his work in Italy, Ingres broke off the engagement, writing in his last letter to Forestier that it was now unthinkable for him to leave Italy.

  3. 1810

    Deciding to stay in Rome

    In 1810 Ingres's pension at the Villa Medici ended, but he decided to stay in Rome and seek patronage from the French occupation government.
