  1. 1976

The “bricks controversy” over “Equivalent VIII”

After an article in The Sunday Times, the work that the Tate had shown several times without incident becomes the centre of a scandal and is later defaced with blue food dye; the “bricks controversy” becomes one of the most famous British debates about contemporary art.

  2. 24 June 1977 – 2 October 1977

    Exhibition: Documenta 6

  3. 1979

    Meets Ana Mendieta

At AIR Gallery in New York the artists Leon Golub and Nancy Spero introduce Andre to the Cuban-born avant-garde artist Ana Mendieta. A romance soon begins: he travels with her through Italy and Germany, introduces her to New York’s art society and helps organize her exhibitions.
