Meanwhile, in the life of Giuseppe Arcimboldo

The whole life
  1. 1570–1573

The Elector of Saxony orders the “Seasons”

Augustus, Elector of Saxony, visited Vienna in 1570 and 1573, saw Arcimboldo’s work and commissioned a copy of the Four Seasons incorporating his own monarchic symbols; the “Winter” made for him bears the arms of Saxony.

  2. 1571–1572

Director and designer of court tournaments

Documents show that Arcimboldo directed and designed two tournaments: one at the wedding festivities of 1571 and one for Rudolf II’s accession to the Hungarian throne in 1572. In the festive procession of 1571 the emperor appeared dressed as Winter.

  3. 1575

    Post: court painter

  4. 1575

The emperor legitimises his son Benedetto

In 1575 Maximilian II legitimised Arcimboldo’s illegitimate son Benedetto.
