    Co-founder and president of the Société Nationale des Beaux-Arts

    Puvis became co-founder and president of the Société Nationale des Beaux-Arts, founded in Paris; its exhibitions, juried solely by the society’s officers, became the dominant salon of the day.

  2. 1897

    Closes his studio

    Borisov-Musatov, captivated by Puvis de Chavannes’s art, tried to become his pupil but came too late: the painter had closed his studio.

  3. 21 July 1897

    Married: Marie Cantacuzène

  4. 1898

    Death of Marie Cantacuzène

    Marie Cantacuzène, Puvis’s companion, model and muse, died three months before him. They had married only shortly before, after four decades together (in 1898, by some accounts).
