    Honorary doctorates

    Lichtenstein received several honorary doctorates, among them from the California Institute of the Arts (1977), Southampton College (1980), Ohio State University (1987), the Royal College of Art (1993) and George Washington University (1996).

    A gift to the National Gallery: 154 prints and two books

    In 1996 Lichtenstein donated 154 prints and two books to the National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C., which became the largest single repository of his work.

    His last weeks in hospital

    Lichtenstein spent several weeks in the New York University Medical Center, where he died of pneumonia at the age of 73.
