  1. 1853–1860

    Music for Tennyson’s poems: twelve settings

    Lear published musical settings of Alfred Tennyson’s poems: four in 1853, five in 1859 and three in 1860; they were the only musical settings that Tennyson approved of.

  2. aged 49 (1861 – 1862)

    The death of his sister Ann, who had been a mother to him

    Ann, who had raised Edward and acted as a mother to him until her death, died when he was almost 50 years old.

  3. 1863

    “Views in the Seven Ionian Isles” is published

    In 1863 Lear’s book Views in the Seven Ionian Isles was published.
