    First museum retrospective in Pasadena

    In 1967 the Pasadena Art Museum in California held Lichtenstein’s first museum retrospective.

    First solo exhibitions in Europe

    In the same year, 1967, Lichtenstein’s first solo exhibition in Europe was held at museums in Amsterdam, London, Bern and Hannover.

    First retrospective at the Guggenheim Museum

    In 1969 the Guggenheim Museum held Lichtenstein’s first retrospective there, organised by Diane Waldman.

    A house and studio in Southampton

    In the late 1960s the couple rented a house in Southampton that Larry Rivers had bought around the corner from his own, and in 1970 Lichtenstein bought a 1910 carriage house facing the ocean on Long Island. He built a studio there, spent the rest of the 1970s in relative seclusion, and split his time between Manhattan and Southampton until his death.
