The whole life1977–1993
Skowhegan Medal, Brandeis award, “Friends of Barcelona”
Lichtenstein received the Skowhegan Medal for Painting (1977), the Creative Arts Award in Painting from Brandeis University (1991) and the “Amici de Barcelona” award from Mayor Pasqual Maragall (1993).
1977–1996
Honorary doctorates
Lichtenstein received several honorary doctorates, among them from the California Institute of the Arts (1977), Southampton College (1980), Ohio State University (1987), the Royal College of Art (1993) and George Washington University (1996).
1978
A Los Angeles trip and German Expressionism
During a trip to Los Angeles in 1978 Lichtenstein was fascinated by the lawyer Robert Rifkind’s collection of German Expressionist prints and illustrated books. He began producing works that borrowed Expressionist stylistic elements: “The White Tree” (1980) evokes the landscapes of Der Blaue Reiter, and “Dr. Waldmann” (1980) recalls a portrait by Otto Dix.
