During a trip to Los Angeles in 1978 Lichtenstein was fascinated by the lawyer Robert Rifkind’s collection of German Expressionist prints and illustrated books. He began producing works that borrowed Expressionist stylistic elements: “The White Tree” (1980) evokes the landscapes of Der Blaue Reiter, and “Dr. Waldmann” (1980) recalls a portrait by Otto Dix.
