    A bomb in Hampstead: the move to Hoglands

    In September 1940 bomb shrapnel hit the Moores’ Hampstead home and they left London for Hoglands, a farmhouse in the hamlet of Perry Green near Much Hadham in Hertfordshire. It remained Moore’s home and workshop for the rest of his life; though he grew wealthy he never felt the need to move to larger premises.

    Up to forty exhibitions a year

    By the end of the 1970s there were some forty exhibitions a year featuring Moore’s work, and the number of commissions kept growing.

    Auction record: a “Reclining Figure” for $1.2 million

    By the end of his career Moore was the world’s most successful living artist at auction: in 1982 Sotheby’s in New York sold a six-foot Reclining Figure (1945) to the collector Wendell Cherry for $1.2 million.
