O obrazu
Dina Lems points towards a West African pepper plant in Daniel Vertangen's Portrait of Dina Lems, painted about 1660 and now in the Rijksmuseum, Amsterdam. Her father and first husband, Jan Valkenburgh, worked for the Dutch West India Company. Their wealth, and hers, depended on trading pepper, ivory, gold and enslaved people. Lems lived in Amsterdam, while Valkenburgh spent most of their marriage at Fort Elmina in Africa. The plant she indicates is grein, cultivated along the continent's western coast. On view in room 2.9, The Netherlands overseas.
Slovy muzea
Dina Lems gestures towards a grein plant, a variety of pepper cultivated on Africa’s west coast. Her father and her first husband, Jan Valkenburgh (opposite), were employed by the Dutch West India Company. Their – and consequently her – prosperity derived from the trade in pepper, ivory, gold, and enslaved people. While Lems resided in Amsterdam, Valkenburgh spent most of their married life at Fort Elmina in Africa.
