O obrazu
Jacob Coeman's 1665 portrait of Pieter Cnoll, Cornelia van Nijenrode, their daughters and two enslaved servants is at the Rijksmuseum, Amsterdam. Cornelia's parents were a Japanese courtesan and a merchant employed by the Dutch East India Company, or VOC. Her husband was a wealthy senior merchant with that company. Surapati, a servant seen behind the family, escaped enslavement some years after this portrait. He fought for the VOC before turning against it, then ruled in East Java. Centuries later, Indonesia declared him a national hero. Displayed in room 2.9.

Cornelia van Nijenrode was the daughter of a Japanese courtesan and a Dutch East India Company (VOC) merchant. She was married to the wealthy senior VOC merchant Cnoll. In the background is Surapati, one of their servants. He fled slavery several years after he was portrayed here. First, he fought in the service of the VOC, but later against it. Surapati then became a monarch in East Java and centuries later was proclaimed Indonesia’s national hero.
