In a 1952 ARTnews article the critic Harold Rosenberg coined the term “action painting”; many assumed he had modelled his “action painter” on Pollock.

Marriage in crisis and an affair with Ruth Kligman
By 1956 the marriage to Lee Krasner had begun to crumble because of Pollock's continuing alcoholism and his infidelity with another artist, Ruth Kligman, who was his lover in the last six months of his life.

Dies in a car crash
On 11 August 1956 at 10:15 p.m. Pollock, driving his Oldsmobile convertible under the influence of alcohol, died in a single-car crash less than a mile from his home. Passenger Edith Metzger was also killed and Ruth Kligman survived; Lee Krasner was visiting friends in Europe and returned abruptly.
