仍属馆藏,只是目前没有展出。
Beatrix Potter (1866-1943) is one of the world's best-loved children's authors and illustrators. She wrote the majority of the twenty-three Original Peter Rabbit Books between 1901 and 1913. The Tale of Peter Rabbit (Frederick Warne, 1902) is her most famous and best-loved tale.
The dog shown on the front of this sheet is thought to be ‘Nip’, a black and white terrier Beatrix Potter owned following her move to the Lake District. She noted that Nip was ‘very good’ and that she was bred at Brothers Water. Potter took the opportunity to sketch her pets in childhood, as a young woman, and, as here, later in life.
The pencil sketch on the back of the sheet has been identified as showing an arch in Hawkshead, a village not far from Potter’s Lakeland home in Near Sawrey. The arch reappears in the background on one of Potter’s illustrations for The Tale of Johnny Town-Mouse (Frederick Warne, 1918).
