The worst of his depression
Debt and family pressures, including the suicide of his nephew Richard, Jonathan’s son, bring on a depression in Martin that reaches its worst in 1838.

His fortunes recover from 1839
Martin’s fortunes recover, and during the 1840s he exhibits many works, among them “The Eve of the Deluge” (1840).

“Pandemonium” and “The Celestial City” bought by Hick
Following their exhibition at the Royal Academy, “Pandemonium”, a scene from “Paradise Lost”, and “The Celestial City and the River of Bliss” are bought by the engineer Benjamin Hick; after Hick’s death in 1842 both paintings are auctioned in Manchester in February 1843, and “Pandæmonium”, in a frame designed by Martin, can now be seen at the Louvre.
