Resigns his Oxford chair
In 1879 Ruskin resigns from Oxford, a decision forced on him partly by his declining health and finally precipitated by the Whistler trial.
1883–1884
Return to the chair and a second resignation
In 1883 Ruskin resumes his professorship, only to resign again in 1884; he gives opposition to vivisection as his reason, but he had increasingly been in conflict with the University authorities, who refused to expand his Drawing School.
