This marble bust representing Paul Joddrell is ascribed to Thomas Ady.
Paul Joddrell (1713-1751) became Solicitor-General to Frederick, Prince of Wales. This bust shows him in the classical manner, with cropped hair and wearing a toga. This suited his professional status, as the education and training of lawyers in Britain was partly based on Roman examples.
Ady (active 1730-1753; d. before 1762) executed a number of funerary monuments, but also carved on a small-scale, and made an ornamental ballot-box for the Society of Dilettanti, as well as ivory carvings.
