Painting

This painting is from an album that contains 50 pictures showing Chinese domestic interiors and garden scenes. They were produced to satisfy the curiosity of westerners who wanted to know more about China. In this scene, a lady draws languidly at her pipe while a child picks up a rather bizarre kitten which fixes its gaze on the viewer.
