Sakurai's pierced white forms are the outcome of a complex process whose traces are not immediately evident from the finished work. She begins by preparing a series of hollow porcelain tubes by slip-casting into plaster molds. Once these tubes are ready, she packs them vertically into a deep container, which she then fills with porcelain slip so that the spaces between the porcelain tubes are filled. The moisture from the slip softens and fuses with the porcelain tubes to produce a solid block pierced vertically with evenly spaced holes. Once this has dried to an appropriate degree, she removes it from the container so that she can carve and hollow it into shape, the holes in the walls of the resulting form corresponding to the hollow centres of the porcelain tubes with which she began.
