Henry Cousens worked with James Burgess (1832-1916), who was Surveyor and Reporter of the Archaeological Survey of Western India (1874-80) and later Director-General of the Archaeological Survey of India (1886-9). As well as producing drawings himself, Cousens trained and supervised Indian draftsmen who were preparing drawings of sites and monuments in western India for the Survey. The V&A has seven examples of his work recording details from recently-discovered caves at Bhaja in the Poona District of Bombay region as well as caves at Ajanta and Kondivate; most are reproduced in J. Fergusson and J. Burgess, 'The Cave Temples of India' (London, 1880).
