Delvaux specialised in nocturnal scenes and ambiguous subjects. In this drawing he plays with the erotic potential of a claustrophobic interior lit only by a naked bulb. Using black, white and grey, the artist manages to contrast the shadows of the night and the stark electric lighting.

With few exceptions, he does not depict her face or cropped brunette hair in his finished paintings, substituting idealized symmetrical features and long blonde hair.
