Pen and ink illustration created for publication in a newspaper/illustrated magazine, probably The Penny Illustrated Paper. It shows the dinner and entertainment given to a group of naval men and officers in Holborn. Annotation at the base of the sketch indicates that the entertainment provided included an appearance by the actor Harry Randall (1860-1932) who was famous for his work as a Pantomime Dame at the Drury Lane theatre. The sketch is not signed or dated but is likely to have been published shortly before or after 1900.
This item is one of several theatrical drawings from a collection of sketches commissioned from contemporary artists to be printed in illustrated magazines. The collection was donated to the museum by Sir William James Ingram in 1914.
