Mary Cassatt began using pastel in the 1870s and continued to experiment with the medium throughout her career. This drawing depicts a mother and child, one of the artist's preferred subjects. Cassatt typically used the technique seen here, in which she finished her sitters' faces with a high degree of detail but rendered the rest of the composition in a much looser and sketchier style.

In the early twentieth century Mary advises major art collectors and does much to persuade them to give their collections to American museums. Recognition of her own work in the United States, meanwhile, comes slowly.
after 1900
Almost exclusively mother and child
After 1900 Mary concentrates almost exclusively on mother-and-child subjects, such as “Woman with a Sunflower”. In her later years she generally uses professional models, in compositions often reminiscent of Italian Renaissance depictions of the Madonna and Child.
