A deceitful lady

This illustration to the poem Rasamanjari by Bhanu Datta shows a woman putting chilli powder in her eyes so that her lover will think they are red from weeping for him. The Rasamanjari classifies the various types of lover, describing this lady as an 'indiscriminate mistress whose lover is away'. The painting, however, shows him returning.
